Antonio Vílchez
Antonio Vilchez paints in Murcia, the same region where Cuadros Sils has been producing art for professional interior design for more than three decades. A Fine Arts graduate, Vilchez works hand in hand with the workshop and, alongside his original artwork, is one of the painters who bring the Vanguard collection to life.
The first thing that strikes you about his work is its range. There is a textural Vilchez, who works the surface like a wall: lime, stucco, exposed hessian, whites on whites where the paint becomes relief and the light does the rest. There is a colourist Vilchez, quick in gesture and open in composition, who lets graphite lines, patches of colour and drips sit alongside intense fields of colour. And there is a contemplative Vilchez, who approaches landscape through atmosphere – mists, reflections, barely suggested horizons – or reduces the picture to the vibration of a single colour in large colour fields. That range, unusual in a painter, is precisely what makes his work such a valuable tool for interior design projects: it can converse with a minimalist, mineral space or with a warm interior of wood and earthy tones, or become the point of greatest intensity in a room. Always large format, always a one-off.
For Vilchez, every canvas is a conversation between material, gesture and silence. The result is work with real physical presence – textures that ask to be looked at up close – and with the serenity needed to live in a space for years.
