Pebrelles
Behind the name Pebrelles is one of the painters with the most recognisable visual language in the Cuadros Sils team. His world can be identified at first sight: large white grounds, almost without atmosphere, on which silhouettes and shapes float, cut out with a goldsmith's precision – and filled, inside, with veritable storms of colour.
That contrast is the key to all his work. The outside of each figure is clean, restrained, almost typographic; the inside is pure controlled accident: transfers, printed marks and dragged paint in which blues, magentas, yellows and blacks come together in compositions that never repeat. Each silhouette works like a window: the painter provides the shape, the paint provides the landscape within.
His subjects revolve around the human figure and organic forms. Rows of anonymous figures talking as they stand, as if sharing a wait; couples walking hand in hand; a woman with her bicycle by the sea; and series in which the figure becomes fully abstract in leaves, spheres and fragments that hang or float with an almost musical, score-like rhythm. Running through it all is a kindly view of everyday life – people passing by, the smallest gestures – raised to the status of icon.
For interior design, Pebrelles offers a much sought-after combination: the visual lightness of white, which breathes in any space, and the vitality of colour in his figures, which adds colour without overwhelming. His pictures bring order to the wall rather than filling it, which is why they sit just as well in minimalist settings as in more expressive interiors.
Pebrelles puts it simply: white is the silence, and his figures are what is worth saying.
